General Information

Introduction

 

Korea Maritime University is the very first national university since the establishment of the Korean government. It was first constructed in the name of ‘Jinhae Higher Merchant Marine College’ in 1945, preserving the longest history and tradition in this University. The school was founded in the light of high education aspiration and by ardent patriotism of few pioneers who had concerned that it was eminent to secure maritime manpower in order to advance the country as one of the powerful countries.  For the last 65 years, the university successfully nurtured numerous maritime specialists which was the driven power of the current growth of Korea's marine transportation and also has helped to position itself as a country of marine transportation marking 5th rank in the world. With such contribution, the school is now recognized as a privilege university in the marine transportation field. While Korea has limited natural resources, the national economy has a special structural trait of high dependency on international trading. The maritime industry has high technology intensity and faces fearful international competition which is difficult industry to promise a stable development without strong support of professional manpower with varieties of professional knowledge.

 

Hence, the KMU is studying and educating knowledge and techniques required for professional manpower in maritime who will be the cardinal point in advancing the maritime management administration of the maritime science industry in Korea.

A University can perform its best when it cooperates with community and the nation. KMU is located in Busan, a world leader in marine trade, and has grown along the city. As a center for maritime studies and education serving the Pacific Rim, KMU will continue to contribute to the growth of Busan and Korea through its support of business incubators and cooperation between in the industrial and university research sectors. In fact, KMU has come close to designation as an independent national university by being chosen for 3 tasks from the NURI (New University for Regional Innovation) nproject of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources.

KMU graduates have 80% employment rate which confirms it as an impeccable place for the maritime specialists. KMU boasters the highest employment rate nationwide. Today’s young people are very concerned about getting a job. In order to help them, KMU has created a variety of job-related programs. As a result, about 80% of graduates are successfully placed in the job market. This is the highest rate among all the Universities in Korea. You will have the satisfaction of transitioning directly into a career right after graduation.

 

Brief History

1919. Sept 15    Founded ‘Jinhae Merchant Marine College”-the Matrix of Korea Maritime University

1945. Nov 05  Founded under the name of ‘Jinhae Higher Merchant Marine College’

1956. July 14  Changed the name to ‘Korea Maritime College’

1974. June 1   Moved to new campus at current location

1991. Oct 22   Reorganized as a General University- “Korea Maritime University”

2002. Mar 01  Reorganized as the current Faculty and System

2003. Sept 08    Established AMFUF (Asia Maritime & Fisheries Universities Forum), and located the Secretariat office in KMU

2005. Nov 05     Celebrated the 60th Anniversary of its foundation.

2006. May         Established IAMU Asia LNGC Education & Training Center (ALETC)

2010. Oct           Hosted 11th IAMU Annual General Assembly

2011. Present     4 Colleges (Maritime Science, Ocean Science & Technology, Engineering and International Studies) – 13 Divisions (28 majors) and 18 Departments. 4 Graduate schools (38 majors in Masters and 26 majors in PhD degree)

There are no boundaries or obstacles which KMOU cannot overcome as we live in the ocean. Over Korea to the world! KMOU plays a central role in helping Korea navigate through the five oceans and six continents. KMOU, based on Jinhae Marine Officer School established in 1919, was developed in 1945 by Dr. Lee Si-Hyeong who pursued Korea’s development through the sea. The footprint made by KMOU for the past 90 years is just the history of Korea’s development and growth in the sea.
