General Information

1 Education Philosophy:

Dokuz Eylul University Maritime Faculty is specialized in undergraduate and graduate education in the fields of logistics, transportation, engineering and business administration as well as in preparing officers for the merchant fleet within the context of maritime related interests of Turkey and the philosophy of total quality, safety, security and environment management. The Faculty is responsible for performing scientific research in the related disciplines as well as providing the industry with training and consultation services. The fundamental aim is to provide the students with maritime traditions and commons, critical and analytical thinking, self-discipline, self-confidence, social responsibility, team working, lifelong learning, managerial and leadership qualifications. With this respect employee involvement and improvement of the quality of work life are the basic principles.

 

2 Education Goals:

The main objective of the Maritime Faculty is to assist the maritime interests of the country by providing education to those who will assume positions in the administrative, managerial and technical bodies of the national and international maritime institutions.

 

3 Brief History:

Turkey has traditional maritime interests emanating from its geopolitical position which dominates both land and sea routes between Europe and Asia. The Faculty was founded in 1982 in the body of the Dokuz Eylül University as the first higher education school in Turkey concerning maritime business and the education started in 1988. Medium of instruction of the Faculty is English and main aim is to meet the qualified manpower requirements of the Turkish maritime industry.

 

  • 1988-1989 51 students were admitted to the Department of Maritime Business Administration

  • 1992-1993 First graduates

  • 1994-1995 First female students admitted to the School

  • 1994-1995 31 students admitted to the Department of Nautical Science

  • 1997-1998 Total of 300 graduates from the Dept. of Maritime Business Administration

  • 1998-1999 First graduates of the Department of Nautical Science

  • 1999-2000 First female student admitted to the Department of Nautical Science 

  • 2000-2001 School of Maritime Business and Management is granted the ISO 9002 Quality Management System Certificate by Italian Naval Registry (RINA) and Italian Certification of Quality Systems

  • 2000-2001 PhD Programme has started

  • 2000-2001 School of Maritime Business and Management has become the member of International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU)

  • < >  12 students were admitted to the Depertment of Marine Engineering < >  The School has been transformed into "Maritime Faculty" with the publication in the Official Gazette dated 31.10.2009 numbered 2009/15486. < >  Higher Education Council of Turkey has decided to transform the title of the Department of Nautical Science into "Department of Marine Transportation Engineering".
